Cordon Blue male
Male - Female Cordon Blue
Pair #1 Cordon Blue
A vivacious songful bird, peaceful and easy going, that will add a vibrant blue to your collection of aviary finch.
Description: 4 - 5 inches in length. Bright sky blue on underparts, breast and head of the male. Bright pinky-red beak. Brown wings and back. Female is duller blue with blue that does not extend beyond the forehead.
Country of Origin: Africa
Diet: Standard finch mix with mixed millets and canary grass. Greens and small pieces of fruit and sprouted seeds. Live food is important to breeding success.
Housing: At least a 2 foot cage or preferably a 6 foot flight cage in a mixed aviary of passive finch. Some like a sleeping nest basket at night.
Breeding: Prolific breeders but not always good parents. Require egg food, greens and soaked or sprouted seed in addition to their normal diet to feed their young. Live food can make the difference between keeping or tossing their young. They prefer cone shaped wicker or large wicker baskets. Provide nesting materials such as sisal, grasses, coco fibre and white feathers to finish and camouflage the nest entrance. Incubation shared by both parents and takes 14 days.
Recommendation: A colorful addition to a mixed finch aviary. More difficult to breed but not impossible with proper feeding. Young can be fostered if necessary by some Bengelese pairs.
